Serena Williams revealed she agrees with her sister’s approach to handling the media amid the fallout following Naomi Osaka’s French Open withdrawal.

Osaka pulled out of the clay-court Grand Slam after a backlash to her plans for a media blackout, citing mental health struggles as the reason behind her decision.

A debate has followed over the role of press conferences in top-level sport and Venus Williams gave a humorously cutting response to how she approaches them.

‘Yeah, it’s definitely not easy to do press I think for any person,’ said Williams.

‘For me personally how I deal with it was that I know every single person asking me a question can’t play as well as I can and never will, so no matter what you say or what you write, you’ll never light a candle to me. So that’s how I deal with it.

‘But each person deals with it differently.’

Serena admitted press conferences can be ‘very difficult at times’ and agreed that her sister had outlined the best approach of how to deal with them.

‘I think press conferences definitely play their part,’ said the younger Williams sister after she advanced to the third round with a three sets win over Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu.

‘I think they’re very difficult to do at times. I’ve had my run-in with journalists, so…’

With a smile she added: ‘Venus said it best.’

Serena Williams wasn’t the only person to applaud Venus’s answer, pop star P!nk praised the 40-year-old on social media.

‘For whatever it’s worth-I’m proud of Naomi Osaka for putting her mental health, her well being above everything,’ she posted. ‘If we don’t take care of our health, our wellness- well then who will?

‘What do we have if we don’t have our health? Don’t we know by now that success isn’t worth our life?

‘She’s (Naomi) an example I would show my children – “listen babies, you can work hard to master your craft, but you do it on your own terms, and screw anyone if they don’t get it”.

‘Also Venus Williams your answer to media scrutiny was everything and you are a goddess and I just love and support the people in the world DOING IT, not the ones TALKING ABOUT THOSE DOING IT. now carry on. Have a good night. Im’a make a sourdough now cause you all stress me out.’

Venus Williams returned the compliment, replying: ‘Love you P!nk goddess.’
